Managing herds of Dorper sheep and Cape Lob Ear goats across the vast, broken ridges of the Klein Karoo requires more than simple obedience—it demands high-drive intelligence and instinctual initiative. Our Border Collies are bred and selected for working capacity under harsh, arid conditions where sheep scatter into rocky shelters and thick acacia scrub.
Rather than selecting for domestic show standards, our focus is entirely on natural herding drive, eye intensity, and environmental resilience. These dogs function as key partners in our grazing management, helping us shift livestock efficiently to promote veld regeneration without stress or chaos.
Heat Tolerance & Stamina
The semi-arid climate of Van Wyksdorp poses severe thermal challenges for active working dogs. We select individuals with strong athletic builds, heat-tolerant coats, and high stamina. Our dogs are trained to pace themselves, working strategically with the handler to utilize natural landscape boundaries and shade.
They possess the structural integrity to cover miles of stony ground daily. This physical durability, coupled with a deep, cooperative bidding relationship with the handler, makes them an indispensable asset for sovereign, low-overhead farm operations.
